Organic Genetics

organically certified

We have been farming organically since 1998 and the key to our success has undoubtedly been the genetic component.

We farm using Agri Quality standards which are internationally recognized by IFOAM. Our Certification number is 50.

With over 20 years of selection for worm resistance, as well as performance traits we already had the genetics to handle the toughest sheep environment of all, organic sheep farming.

Unlike many organic farmers we have been able to maintain the same stocking rate on our organic as our conventional farm (currently 12 stock units / hectare). This is at a sheep to cattle ratio of 80:20. Our organic stud flock numbers - 1200 ewes and is fully recorded using Studfax and SIL. The Avalon Perendale, Avalon Texel and Avalon Wiltshire are all farmed organically. All sheep are on a one life time drench, maximum policy. The genetics we sell have come from this tough genetic base.

The flocks we run are all genetically linked so the organic genetics are equal to the Avalon Perendale genetics.

Currently our organic rams are raised organically then farmed conventionally from weaning under a minimal drenching programme. Since 2006 we have been offering certified organic rams but we will dip and drench animals to prepare them for our conventional clients, if required.

Getting Started in Organic Farming

Our recommendation for anyone hoping to farm organically at commercial levels is to seek advice on your current genetics and their suitability for organic farming.

If you haven’t been using resistant high performance genetics then we would suggest the following options:

Option 1
Generation 1: Wiltshire Rams
Generation 2: Wiltshire
Generation 3: Wiltshire

The Wiltshire gives a rapid reduction in wool around the points and crutch, reducing dagging inputs. This increases with each generation. Performance and resistance status are good making this a great wool free organic sheep.

Option 2
Ultimate sheep has unique ability to lift tail and stay clean
Generation 1: Perendale x Texel
Generation 2: Avalon Ultimate
Generation 3: Avalon Ultimate

The Avalon Ultimate has a unique ability to lift its tail and stay cleaner than conventional tailed animals.
