Avalon Perendale
The Avalon Perendale has and continues to be the star performer of the Avalon Genetics.
In all the traits we select for - including fertility, growth, meat yield, work resistance, and facial eczema - the Perendale comes out tops.
We have 800 fully recorded perendale ewes. Our large scale progeny testing program allows us to fully evaluate top ram hoggets before using them as stud sires.
Multi-disease Resistance
We were one of the first studs in NZ to select for both worm resistance as well as their high performance in 1989. Our interest in low input genetics has also shown us that selection for worm resistance gives multi disease resistance including facial eczema, grass staggers, and we also believe external parasites can also be included. Half our recorded flock is now farmed on a "one lifetime drench" basis.
Facial Eczema
In our second year of testing for facial eczema tolerance using Ramguard, 83% of ram hoggets from 13 sires showed high resistance to a year 5 (1.8mg/kg) of sporidesmin. These animals are all high performance and highly worm resistant rams.
55/01 remains one of NZ's Top Dual Purpose Rams for meat and growth.
Advanced Central Evaluation (ACE) genetic analysis allows us to compare the performance of sires of different breeds and in different flocks right across the country.
Never before have we been able to compare different breeds in different places on a level playing field. This is truly the "Ovine Olympics".
