Stud Objective History
Stud Objective
Top quality meat and wool production from a 60-65kg ewe run at commercial stocking rates with minimum chemical and labour inputs.
Avalon Genetics
Avalon Genetics has a performance recorded flock of 1200 ewes. We are based in the rolling to sheep hills near Heriot in Otago. We are specialists in breeding high performance multi-disease resistant sheep and were one of the first studs in NZ to start selection for worm resistance back in 1988.
As part of the Avalon farming operation we have 500 ha which is farmed organically. This gives us the unique situation of challenging our stud ewes under the toughest conditions a sheep can face. Life without regular drenching or dipping because of the progress we have made is now the norm, and we are breeding sheep which perform with just one lifetime drench.
Avalon Genetics Aim
Our aim is to breed very efficient high performance sheep which are not reliant on large chemical or labour inputs - performance without the drenching or dipping!
We have our main stud - the Bonnieview Perendale - with 800 ewes, the Avalon Texel with 200 ewes, and the Avalon Wiltshire with 240 ewes.
Our Perendale, Texel, & Wiltshire studs along with our exciting crossbreed and composite/organic options have the genetics which will increase your performance, cut your production costs, and improve the bottom line.
History
The Bonnieview Perendale stud was started by Colin Richardson in 1968 and has been performance recorded since then.
The Avalon Texel and Wiltshire studs were started by Allan in 1999. In 2004 we have brought these studs together under the Avalon Genetics stable to gain from using worm resistant genetics combined with a low chemical farm system.
