Avalon Texel
We have been introducing Texel genetics into our flock since 2000. Our genetics are based on Errol & Bev Holgates high fertility dual purpose Texel, the ‘Meba’ Stud.
We are breeding up our Texel numbers using our recorded Perendale ewe base. The Texel crosses have been in all our performance and disease recording which is standard for our Perendale flock.
Resistant Status
There is a wide variation between sires for worm resistance. There has been very little done on the Texel in this area. Most Texels seem to be resilient. Resilient sheep still perform well under low or nil drenching but they pass out high levels of worm larvae which put susceptible animals under increased pressure.
We have found a resistant line in the Texels we have progeny tested.
Facial eczema is not high in the purebred but okay tolerance in the cross or composite option.
